Dia de los muertos

The days are fast approaching when we will celebrate Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, in Mexico, around the world, and of course here at Eye’s Gallery.  The festivities begin on November 1st, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day (November 2), though have roots that go back 3000 years to their origins in Aztec ritual . On November 1st, the spirits of all deceased children (angelitos) are allowed to reunite with their families.  On the 2nd, the adults arrive to partake in the festivities. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, mounds of peanuts and fruit, and wild marigolds, and figurines. People also honor their beloved deceased by visiting and decorating their graves with these and other treasures.
